Computer Assisted Design Aids for the Fired Arts Artist

Computer Assisted Design Aids are created by computer and the designs are printed on a clear transfer paper using a special printer with the iron oxide for toner. When fired, the transfer paper burns away leaving the iron oxide which fires to a sepia color.

Computer Assisted Design Aids provide the same benefits as tracing a design and dusting with paint but with less time and opportunity for error.

Apply the design to your piece by soaking the transfer paper in lukewarm water (heat stretches and distorts the design) until the backing paper drops off. Apply to your piece ensuring that no air bubbles prevent close contact with the surface. HINT: I like to have the surface of the piece wet so that the transfer paper slides easily into position. Allow to dry completely before firing.

Design Aids fire well directly onto unglazed pieces; however, because there is no flux mixed with the mineral, firing onto glazed pieces requires one of two approaches:

  1. fire at a high enough temperature (glaze fire) to open the glaze and accept the design
  2. apply the Design Aid over a painted, fired section or paint over the dried design before firing at a normal cone.
