11:00 Funeral Mass (†) for Estanislao (Stan) Gegunde
Date:2026‑05‑14
Time:11:00am

Stan was born on January 30, 1936, in the village of San Antolin de Ibias, in the province of Asturias, in northwestern Spain. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Mauri Gegunde, his children, Silvia D’Costa (Mark D’Costa) and Gregg Gegunde (Hilary Foulkes); and his grandsons, Ayden D’Costa and Ryan and Lucas Gegunde. He was predeceased by his son, Tony Gegunde.

Stan was a highly skilled master carpenter who advanced his career in Madrid, working with distinguished fine furniture and piano manufacturing houses in the 1960s. Stan and Mauri immigrated to Calgary, AB, in 1968 from Madrid, Spain, with their two sons, Tony and Gregg. Several years later, their daughter Silvia was born in Calgary. Throughout his career, Stan contributed to many commercial projects across Calgary that still bear his craftsmanship, including the University of Calgary Science Theatres, the Scotiabank Saddledome, and the Calgary Petroleum Club, among others. In 1975, Stan founded his own construction company, specializing in high-end residential renovations and additions in the communities of Mount Royal, Bel Aire, and Elbow Park. As a younger man, Stan was a semi-professional boxer in the lightweight division in Madrid in the late 1950s and later earned a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do in Calgary.

Stan was an earnest, principled man who loved his family and friends deeply. He was generous with his time and care for others, and he devoted himself fully to his family, standing resolute beside his wife until his end.

Our family sincerely thanks the incredible Agape Hospice team for their care, support, and compassion for Stan and our family. We would also like to acknowledge the medical professionals at the Peter Lougheed Centre and the AHS Home & Community Care team. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Salvation Army Agape Hospice, www.agapehospice.ca.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Stan’s Life will follow at Corpus Christi Hall.
