Hiring - Apprentice Automotive Service/Heavy Equipment Technician

Position Summary:

The Apprentice Automotive Service/Heavy Equipment Technician works under the direction of the Lead Automotive Service/Heavy Equipment Technician and Logistics Manager. The Apprentice Automotive/Heavy Equipment Technician is an entry-level position focused on gaining practical experience in the repair and maintenance of fleet and heavy equipment. Working under direction of a certified journeyperson, the Apprentice Automotive Service/Heavy Equipment Technician assists with routine servicing, troubleshooting, and component replacement while developing mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic skills. The role includes general shop and yard duties to support safe, efficient operations. This role emphasizes safety awareness, skill development, and progression toward journeyperson certification.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs of fleet and heavy equipment
  • Follow Occupational Health & Safety (OHS), environmental, and manufacturer standards
  • Maintain tools, service trucks, equipment, shop bays, yard and work areas in a clean, safe and organized condition
  • Assist with washing, moving, and staging equipment
  • Assist with record keeping and filing of service reports and repairs
  • Complete assigned shop and yard housekeeping duties
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to skill development
Qualifications:

Required:
  • Registered Apprentice Automotive Service Technician and/or Heavy Equipment Technician with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT)
  • Working experience in all aspects of the trade: performing preventative maintenance, basic repairs, diagnostics, etc.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of trade tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of workplace safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and with teammates.
  • Possess valid driver’s license with acceptable drivers abstract
  • Safety certifications: CSTS 2020 with WHMIS, First Aid and Fall Protection
Preferred:
  • 3rd or 4th Year Automotive Service Technician and/or Heavy Equipment Technician recognized in the province of Alberta
  • Possess Class 5 (with airbrakes), 3 or 1 driver’s license
  • 2-3 years experience in fleet, construction, earthworks and overhead and underground utility equipment repairs
Work Environment:
  • Combination of indoor shop, outdoor yard and offsite work with exposure to varying environmental conditions
  • Travelling offsite to diagnose and/or repair equipment
  • Handling and disposing of waste materials
  • Exposure to noise from tools, equipment and offsite work settings
  • Lifting and manipulating objects and materials of up to 50 lbs
  • Manual dexterity
  • Bending, crouching, kneeling and climbing to perform tasks
  • Working within restrictive, tight and confined spaces
  • Performing tasks while wearing jobsite/worksite appropriate PPE
  • Exposure to shop, yard and offsite hazards associated with the trade and individual jobsite/worksite settings
  • Working additional hours and days outside of normal work schedule
